Why I'm learning Japanese

From when I was two to four years old, I lived in Tokyo. During my time there I attended a local preschool and picked up the language quickly. Afterwards I moved back to New York, but I still interacted frequently with Japanese culture. Although I can still speak Japanese well enough for casual conversation, I never learned it formally, and so my knowledge of basic grammar and sentence structure is lacking. That is why I decided to take a Japanese course in college. I took the placement test thinking that I could get into Japanese II, but was told that my reading and writing skills were lacking. I guess that just shows how much I have to learn.

This week marks the 5th week taking this course. Already, I feel like I have a stronger grasp on the basics. What's interesting is when in class, my teacher explains the reason behind a certain grammar rule or irregularity that I always took for granted. I'm excited to see what else we learn!
